Europe on Edge as U.S. Cuts Fighter Jets, Ships Assigned to NATO
As part of its strategic plan, the US has announced that it would drastically reduce its air and naval capabilities that were assigned for NATO in Europe. As per the report by The New York Times, the plan involves reducing fighter jets assigned to NATO by half to just 100 from 150, cutting maritime patrol aircrafts from 26 to 15, and withdrawing all eight tanker aircrafts. Besides this, a bomber task force, a ballistic missile sub, an aircraft carrier along with a number of warships will be moved outside Europe owing to a change in the U.S. focus toward the Middle East, Asia, and Americas. It is worth noting that President Donald Trump's administration has been critical of NATO countries' low spending on their armies and reliance on America's security, and has called on them to increase their spending to 3.5% of the GDP. Although the move was officially brushed aside by NATO officials citing an attempt to decrease dependence on one single ally, European nations are in a fix.
